Tekoah
Tekoah is a settlement in the Gush Etzion region of the Judean Mountains. The settlement is 18 kilometers southeast of Jerusalem on the site of biblical Tekoah and is adjacent to the Herodion historical monument.
Tekoah is situated on a mountain ridge 650 meters (approximately 2,150 feet) above sea level on the edge of, and overlooking, the Judean Desert. The climate is dry and cool, with pleasantly cool summer evenings even during the hot Israeli summer.
Tekoah is the home of the biblical prophet Amos, whose prophecies are rich with descriptions of his "home town" and its environs. Tekoah was a District Capital of Judea during the Second Temple period and cntrolled the strategic route between the mountain cities of Judea and the Dead Sea agricultural oasis of Ein Gedi.
Tekoah is a settlement where both religious and secular families live in harmony. The settlement was founded in 1977 by a core group of immigrants from the then Soviet Union, and has since successfully absorbed immigrants from Russia, the Anglo-Saxon countries and from all over the world. Tekoah is a model of religious and ethnic tolerance and harmony. Today Tekoah comprises over 180 families, ranging across the entire spectrum: from older families to young couples and families with very young children.
Tekoah has several nursery schools and kindergartens; and the renown Judea Regional 'Unity of Israel' elementary school where Tekoah's children are educated in the spirit of national unity and brotherhood. The settlement has a mini-market, mikveh, medical clinics and a library. Tekoah also has a large and active community and cultural center (a joint project of Tekoah and the adjacent settlement of El-David) as well as a local newspaper .
Approximately 70% of the residents of Tekoah are employed in nearby Jerusalem, only a short commute away. The balance are employed in and around the settlement (agriculture, small industry, tourism, etc.).
The residents of Tekoah are committed to maintaining a harmonious lifestyle based on the principles of Ahavat Yisrael and Zionism. Prospective applicants for Tekoah must be socially compatible. All applicants must be interviewed and accepted by the Tekoah New Residents Committee.
The homes of Tekoah are marketed by Amana - Gush Emunim Settlement Movement and the Yakir settlement. Amana is the settlement arm of Gush Emmunim and is responsible for developing and expanding over 100 settlements in Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Region.
Families purchasing homes in Tekoah are entitled to special mortgages and loans totalling up to $49,000. Of these mortgages and loans, approximately $14,000 are automatically converted into a grant (forgiven) if the family continues to reside in Tekoah for 15 years.
The following is a sample of the new construction homes which are currently offered for sale in Tekoah. There are also large lots available for purchase by those who wish to design and build their own homes:
